About our Spawn
Mushroom People is North America's oldest supplier for specialty mushroom growers. Our business is built on consistent, high-yield mushroom spawn, good advice, and fast reliable service.
Our focus is on Shiitake, the well-know forest mushroom. The most successful Shiitake growers in North America are still small family owned farms using hardwood logs.
Our proprietary strains of Shiitake are proven, high-quality, high-yield strains that are suitable for a wide variety of climates and conditions.
Mushroom People Strains are available in Plug or Sawdust Spawn. Logs will keep fruiting for several years without the need to Re-inoculate. (This is true for all strains and species of mushrooms).
MP510 Wide Range Shiitake Spawn
Our best selling all-around strain. It fruits from about 55 to 80°F. Produces indoors or outdoors, yielding large mushrooms with thick flesh. Tolerant to hot and cool weather, it has a fast spawn run of 6 to 9 months from inoculation to harvest.
MP512 Warm Weather Shiitake Spawn
Fruits around 65 - 80°F, 9 to 12 months after inoculation. Produces large mushrooms with medium thick flesh. Outdoor Strain.
MP852 Warm, Dry Weather Shiitake Spawn
Fruits around 60 - 86°F, greenhouse or outdoor strain. Fruits best in hot weather. This strain is sensitive to overwatering, and needs an airy, less humid fruiting area.
MP853 Warm, Humid Weather Shiitake Spawn
Fruits around 60 - 82°F, greenhouse or outdoor strain. This strain produces the largest mushrooms (up to 7 1/2" across) with the thickest flesh. Slow to fruit (10 months to a year) but with the longest production life by 20 to 40%.
MP855 Cold Weather Shiitake Spawn
Fruits around 41 - 68°F, greenhouse or outdoor strain. Incubation period is long, running from 9 months to 1 1/2 years. Good for colder climates or to reduce greenhouse heating costs during continuous cultivation in the winter.
MP910 Newer Wide Range Shiitake Spawn
This is a new wide-range temperature-fruiting strain of shiitake derived from a popular and highly productive Chinese strain. Fruiting range is 53-83°F. Produces both indoors and outdoors on natural logs. Yields large mushrooms with thick flesh, tolerant to hot and cool weather. Has a fast spawn run, 6-9 months from inoculation to first harvest.
About Shiitake Spawn
"Mushroom Spawn" is the seed material used to inoculate logs and other media. It is available in cold-weather, warm weather, and wide-range fruiting strains. Each strain tends to produce a slightly different grade of mushroom. In Japan the different grades of Shiitake are called Donko, Koko, and Koshin.
Donko are thick-fleshed with inrolled margins and beautiful "cracked mandala pattern" caps. The are considered more potent in their antiviral and immune-boosting qualities. Donko grades are produced by wide-range and cold-weather strains growing in cool, dry-to-humid cycling conditions.
Koshin are thin-fleshed with caps that tend to flatten out, associated with warm strains, warmer temperatures and high humidity.
Koko are intermediate between Koshin and Donko, having medium thick flesh and partially open caps, produced by wide-range strains in warm weather and moderate humidity.
Environmental conditions can alter the type of mushrooms produced by a strain type, within certain limits. It is possible for cold weather strains to produce both Donko and Koko mushrooms or for warm weather types to produce Koko or Koshin depending on temperature conditions and relative humidity.
When ordering for year round continuous cultivation, you may want to select at least two types depending on your climate. One for your coldest seasons and one for your warmest. This is true even if you are doing force fruiting in greenhouses as it will reduce the heating and cooling energy requirements, although our wide-range strains do well under a variety of conditions.
