Spawn is the mushroom culture in bulk, the “seed” material used to cultivate mushrooms in logs, sawdust, straw, or other media. Spawn can be stored for 2 to 3 months at 34–41° F, if unopened, or about a week once opened. Do not freeze!
Plug or dowel spawn is available for shiitake only. All the other spawn species we have are in sawdust spawn, and, in the case of Tree Oyster, we also stock grain spawn. Lion’s Mane – sawdust spawn
Hericium erinaceus is grown experimentally in wafer stacks or partially buried logs in damp places, and also in sterilized sawdust bags. Sawdust spawn only.
Maitake – sawdust spawn
Grifola frondosa grows experimentally in hardwood logs or stacked log wafers in plastic bags, but most reliably in sterilized sawdust & woodchip bags. Sawdust spawn only.
Morel – sawdust spawn
Morchella angusticeps are delicious, but growing them is tricky and difficult, no guarantees! Grown in the soil in sheltered areas of the woods or garden. Sawdust spawn only.
Phoenix Oyster – sawdust spawn
Pleurotus pulmonarius is a warm-weather fruiter, unique for growing well in softwoods like pine, fir, and spruce logs, as well as in the soft hardwoods like poplar. cottonwood, sweetgum, willow, etc. The Phoenix oyster is heat-loving, and grows well in India and Hawaii.

Tree Oyster – sawdust spawn
Pleurotus ostreatus grows well in softer hardwoods like poplar. Sawdust spawn only.
Morel – Sawdust Spawn
The Black Morel (Morchella angusticeps), like the other morel species, is quirky and unreliable because it has not been cultivated for decades like shiitake and oyster mushrooms. However, their unique zesty flavor keeps people trying and sometimes succeeding in growing these delicacies of the forest. Morels are grown in the soil, in areas sheltered from strong wind but not necessarily clear of grasses or trees. Detailed instructions are provided with your order.
