SPAWN is the mushroom culture in bulk form. It is used as seed to cultivate mushrooms in logs, sawdust, straw, and other growing media. Spawn can be stored for 2-3 months at 34-41º F, if unopened in its plastic bag, or about a week once it’s opened. Do not freeze!

The basic types of spawn are Plug Spawn, Sawdust Spawn, and Grain Spawn.
Plug Spawn and Sawdust Spawn are used to grow mushrooms in natural hardwood logs.
Grain Spawn is used to grow mushrooms in pasteurized hardwood sawdust, straw, coffee grounds, or other plant media.

Plug Spawn comes in 1,000 plug bags, will inoculate about 30 logs averaging 4" diameter x 40" long. Available only in the five strains of Shiitake.   $35 per bag

Starter Kits is a good introduction to growing Shiitake for the beginner. It consists of 300 plugs, 1 lb. of cheesewax, and 10 log tags, enough to inoculate about 10 hardwood logs averaging 4" diameter x 40" long. Available only in the five strains of Shiitake.  $19.00 per kit.
 
Sawdust spawn comes in 1 Kg. bags, enough to inoculate about 20 hardwood logs averaging 4" diameter x 40" long. Available in the five strains of Shiitake, and also in Oysters, Maitake, Reishi, Lions Mane, and Black Morel.  $19.00 per bag for any species of mushroom.

Grain spawn is available in 5 lb. bags, available only for the Tree Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus), enough to inoculate about 80 dry pounds of sawdust or straw. $20 per bag.
